Thursday, July 10, 2007 Newsletter “Montreal - The GEOS Insider” Students #2 |
|
Starting on June the 28th, Montreal is singing in tune with a planet of music, and that for 11 days and nights, this profoundly unifying event is turning North America’s French capital into a mecca for everyone from aficionados of pure jazz to fans of all its musical relatives.
“Le Festival International de Jazz de Montreal” is a global event for all people: some 20 to 30 countries are represented at the Fest by roughly 3,000 musicians and street performers. With 500 concerts, including 350 free shows to choose from, we join some 250,000 tourists who come to the City of Festivals every year for musical discoveries and reunions.
At the Festival, music finds various forms of expression, from the daily Louisiana parade to a marquee event, from an intimate concert or avant-garde set to a major performance from a living legend, from jam sessions to the Petite école du jazz, and from a cruise to a workshop given by a big-name performer or stringed-instrument maker.
All forms of music are welcome, as the Festival—in the image of jazz itself—is curious, adventurous, averse to limitations and unprejudiced. Our legendary guests are international stars who transcend borders: Bob Dylan, Keith Jarrett, Harry Connick, Jr., Cesaria Evora, Wynton Marsalis, Manu Chao, Zachary Richard and Francis Cabrel, or the hosts of the prestigious and now classic Invitation series, Richard Bona and Mike Stern, who will each give five different concerts, including a performance together. In short, this program offers a myriad array of musical choices.
Today we have about 150 students enjoying this fabulous event among others. If your students are planning to comeback to Montréal it would be a good idea to consider coming during this period of the year.
